About: Tyson Foods is a protein-focused food producer, selling raw chicken, beef, pork, and prepared foods. Chicken and beef are its two largest segments, each comprising about one-third of US sales. Prepared foods constituted 18% of fiscal 2024 sales and include brands like Tyson, Jimmy Dean, Hillshire Farm, Ball Park, and Sara Lee. However, most of these are in product categories rife with competition where Tyson does not have a massive market share lead. Tyson sells some products overseas, but the international segment accounts for just 4% of total revenue. The company is an active acquirer, with more recent years' purchases focused on international and food-service markets.

Tyson Foods: Recent Improvements Justify A Bullish Outlook
Despite a 1.3% decline in Tyson Foods' stock since my last 'buy' rating, I maintain a soft 'buy' due to its attractive valuation and positive trends. Tyson's Chicken and Prepared Foods segments showed significant profit improvements, driven by operational efficiencies and lower input costs, despite revenue contractions. Its Beef segment faced challenges with compressed margins and declining production, but overall company profitability improved, with net income and cash flow increasing significantly.

Tyson Foods Farms Free Cash Despite Cyclical Downturn
Tyson Foods faces margin contraction due to pork and beef market downturns but generated $1.5 billion in free cash flow and increased its dividend by 2%. Prepared foods and chicken segments show resilience, with expected growth in operating income and margins, driven by value-added products and stable input costs. Pork and beef segments remain pressured by commodity prices and market conditions, but Tyson is positioned for recovery once the upcycle begins.
